Why Captain Morgan Harris is better for Anne of Green Gables than Gilbert Blythe

When Sara and I were younger, we loved to watch Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea, a television series that was made in 1985. I remember us reenacting the scene where Anne and her bosom friend Diana Bary accidentally get drunk. We would drink cranberry or grape juice and pretend it was Raspberry Cordial. It's interesting that of all the scenes from the show, we both thought that that one was the funnest to play - considering that neither of us has had an alcoholic drink to this day.

Recently, Sara and I were discussing this movie and how I always wanted Anne to marry Captain Morgan Harris (even at the tender age of a single digit). Well, Sara said she was glad that Anne and Gilbert ended up together. We proceeded to argue and disagree and decided to present our arguments on our blogs. So this is why I wanted Anne to choose Captain Morgan Harris:

1. He's more handsome than Gilbert in my opinion.
2. He liked her and showed her he liked her (by asking her to marry him) whereas Gilbert danced around the idea of loving Anne for pretty much his whole existence. I mean, Gil had to face death in order to realize he loved Anne.
3. He has the title of Captain in his name! Who doesn't want to be in love with a captain?
4. She got along so well with his daughter, Emmeline (who needed a mother figure around like Anne).
5. His pad was fly, yo.
6. Gilbert had a constant bubble in his throat.
7. Perhaps the biggest difference between the two is that Gil is a boy while the Captain is a man. Who wants an indecisive boy when you can have a man who knows what he wants and goes after it? Man, I was ahead of my time at the age of 5. Hey, I'm a child prodigy of love and romance, Sara - HA!

So everyone who remembers Anne with an "E" and her love interests, please write your thoughts about it in the comment section and be sure to visit Sara's Blog to view her opinion on why Gilbert is the better choice.

I apologize for there being no photo of the Cap'n, but I couldn't find one. Hmph.

Au contraire, sister. Gilbert didn't wait until he was dying to tell Anne he loved her. He told her at Diana Barry's wedding. It was Anne who didn't know how she felt until Gilbert was dying. So there!

It's funny that you think the Captain was more handsome because I thought Gilbert was more handsome. Although, I don't really think Jonathan Crombie is. Hm.

Ouch! Alright, my memory fails me. I mean it has been about a decade since last I saw the show.

I watched some clips of it on YouTube yesterday in preparation of my post and realized that I don't think either of them are that handsome anymore, but at the time I preferred the captain.

Did you start talking about Anne of Green Gables because I mentioned it the other day?

Anyway, I totally agree with Sara. The romantic in me always preferred Gilbert. I think it has something to do with unrequited love finally being rewarded. I have hope that someday my unrequited love will no longer be unrequited.

No, no, you're both wrong -- I thought it would have been Anne and Diana, kindred spirits, together forever!

I agree with Lexia in that I think Captain Morgan Harris is more handsome than Gilbert Blythe. However, being handsome isn't everything. Captain Morgan Harris shows some personality defects that make me wonder if he and Anne would have ever been happy.

Whereas, Gilbert Blythe ever seems the long suffering, self-sacrificing, decent hometown boy. Gilbert seems to spend most of his time trying to "make it up to" Anne. Gilbert also inspires Anne to be better than she is (by suggesting she write about Avonlea). Morgan on the other hand, is the one that is inspired by Anne to be a better man.

I do love the sound of Captain Morgan Harris' voice (as portrayed by Frank Converse).

I think that the Captain is... he is a really man, a person who lives. I like Gilbet, he is nice and gentle, but so "quiet". Morgan is interesting. If I am Anne, I love him instead of Gil. But Anne chose Blythe - they grew up together, I think it's important for Anne's love.
Anyway, I adore Morgan Harris.

I have to agree with Lexia! I would have chosen Morgan Harris, because he is a really man. He is more handsome and I love his voice!
But maybe Anne thought of their different personalities and thought that`s why their marriage wouldn`t end up happily.
Nevertheless, Anne should have said yes to Morgan Harris proposal! I would have loved to see this.

I think that people have made some good arguments in favor of Captain Harris, but I am a HUGE romantic, and I have to admit that I have been in love with Gilbert ever since I first saw Anne of Green Gables (and read the books) when I was seven. So definitely Team Gilbert! :)

Hi! I also loved the Anne books (what redhead didn't?!?) and thought she should've married Capt. Harris. He would have treated her like a goddess, kept encouraging her to be everything she could be, and given life to all her girlhood dreams. I loved Gil too, but he was a boy...a conflicted boy at that, and I always thought there was a deeper friendship there than an all consuming, passionate love. Found a pic of Frank Converse (who played Morgan)...:)

Gil stood up to Anne and challenged her, told her to write and stop feeling sorry for herself, he might be young but he is more than a boy. Captain challenged her in different ways, but he also showed her no attention when the business associate was around. Anne was the only one Gil focused on. Part of me wanted her to marry captain, but I think Gil is right choice.

Wow so I know you probably wrote this ages ago but I just watched the sequel to Anne of green gables and I had this exact thought. I believe that Morgan Harris was just truer in his love. Maybe it's because he loved her regardless of her class and age and just how she is lower than him from everyone else's point of view.
And yeah maybe it is that Morgan seems more of a man while Gilbert is just a boy who is trying to be a man and just following what everyone thinks he should doing, like marrying some respectable girl even if he doesn't love them.
I don't know maybe I'm being to optimistic but I feel as if hey could of been so happy together with the girl who she would be a mother figure too her and they could of been a really happy family and she could have wrote more books and I feel they could of been truly happy.

Recently watched Anne/Avonlea,received from a friend. Yes, we loved Gilbert & his boyish handsomeness & sweetness in Green Gables..wondered how Anne could rebuff him time & again..but for me, in "Avonlea" I noticed how upon meeting Morgan Harris, Anne suddenly meets a man who is much like her romantic ideals.I feel she should have accepted his marriage proposal, maybe she`d have learned to appreciate a new kind of life outside of the "Gables" I am a fan of the unexpected..the surprise twist at the end..it was expected by everyone for Anne & Gilbert to marry, no surprise..maybe there's an age difference w/her & Morgan, but Anne was quite mature for her age, I think she would have continued to uplift him & Emmeline w/her buoyant spirit, and life could be happy & good for them. Yes, have to agree Captain Harris is a man w/o a gorgeous voice & arresting blue eyes...agree w/above mentioned, would've loved to see his proposal accepted. Thanks for this blog !

My favourite would be Jack Garrison. He's fun, bold, a bit bad boyish and he's a man of the world. If I were Anne, I'd choose him any day over anyone else :)

I think the point was that morgan harris was anne’s ideal since she was a child bht when the moment came she realized it wasnt what she really wanted; thats what she meant when she told gil in the end “ its not what the world holds for you but what you bring to it that matters”. In the end, living back home in green gables with gil & her family was what she needed and upon reflection was right there for her all along.
